Inside and outside bets in roulette

Inside and outside bets are the most common betting options one can make at roulette. Here you may find an explanation for both basic types of roulette bets and information on payouts and probabilities for both inside and outside bets.

Inside bets

The players place their inside bets in roulette on an inside area of the roulette table layout. Inside bets are bets on any certain number or on a group of numbers that are situated next to each other on the roulette layout. Inside roulette bets are more risky compared to outside bets. Nevertheless they offer much higher payouts.

  • Straight bet is a bet on any given number on a layout. It is a practically improbable bet with chances to hit any certain number so low. Nevertheless, they pay the most - 35 to 1 (of course, the true odds are higher as there are 36 numbers on the wheel, but the presence of the zero reduces the odds at roulette). The probability for the straight bet differs for European and American roulette and makes 2.7% and 2.63% respectively.
  • Split bet is a bet on two numbers placed together on the layout, both on the vertical or on the horizontal. To make a split bet, the player is supposed to put the chips on a line between both numbers. The bet pays 17 to 1 and has 5.4% (European roulette) or 5.26% (American roulette) probability.
  • Street bet is made on 3 numbers situated horizontally. The player is to place the chip on the edge of a number's line at the end of a whole line. The payout will be 11 to 1.
  • Corner bet is a bet on four numbers placed in a square. The player places the chip in the middle intersection of lines between all numbers. It pays 8 to 1.
  • Line bet made on 6 numbers (it is also called a Double Street bet) pays 5 to 1. The chip is placed on the intersection between the two Streets.

There is an additional Five-number bet which is only available in double-zero American roulette. It is a bet on both zeros - '0' and '00' and numbers 1, 2 and 3. One of the tips for roulette is to avoid this bet in all cases as far as the house edge increases up to almost 7.9% with this bet.

Outside bets

Outside bets are situated on the outside section of the layout. These bets are more probable compared to the inside bets. At the same time they are less paid - 2 to 1 or even 1 to 1 for even money bets.

  • Even money bets are made on large groups of numbers as defined by color - Black or Red, Odd or Even or Low (numbers from 1 to 18) and High (numbers from 19 to 36). These are paid at 1 to 1 meaning the player gets even money for his or her bet. The roulette probabilities for even money bets make 48.6% for European roulette and 46.37% for the American variant of the game.
  • Columns are the three vertical lines of numbers as arranged on the layout. These bets are paid out at 2 to 1. Dozens (1st, 2nd and 3rd 12 numbers on the layout) pay 2 to 1. The probabilities for both bets make 32.4% for European roulette and 31.58% for American roulette.
