European roulette odds explained

Here you can find the explanation to the European roulette odds and the winning probabilities for various bets in roulette.

Single-zero wheel advantages

The single-zero European roulette wheel helps to reduce the roulette house edge over the players, thus increasing the European roulette odds. The house edge for European roulette makes about 2.63% compared to the 5.26% in American roulette. This means that every $1 the player bets while playing European roulette might pay back about 97.4 cents. At the same time, every $1 in American roulette will give back only about 94.7 cents. Also, it means that the player loses only about $2.7 for every $100 bet.

In fact, the outside bets in European roulette offer even odds meaning that the chances of hitting Red or Odd and losing your bet are equal (if not to take a zero into consideration). What the zero makes is brings long term profit to the casino. This means that if you win your straight bet with true odds of 36 to 1 (the roulette wheel having 37 numbers - 1 to 36 plus a single zero), your actual European roulette odds will make only 35 to 1.

La Partage and En Prison rules

In order to reduce the house edge, two special favorable rules were added to the basic European roulette rules. Both rules actually concern cases when the outcome of the spin is zero and greatly improve the European roulette odds. By means of these rules the house edge will be reduced to about 1.35%.

  • According to the rule of En Prison, the player is able to postpone his or her bet on even money (Black-Red, Odd-Even or High-Low) if zero was hit until the next spin. In case the next bet wins, the player will get back the initial betting amount. If it loses, the player loses all money.
  • The La Partage rule allows the player to get back half his or her even money bet if zero is the outcome.
